Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance

image If your trip is cancelled, interrupted or delayed for a specific reason listed in the policy, such as an unexpected event or an injury to you, a family member, or travelling companion, we will reimburse you for the non-refundable amount.

Before you leave:
  • If you cancel your trip due to an insured risk, we will reimburse you for the non-refundable, non-recoverable portion of prepaid airfare and travel arrangements.
  • If you have to pay a single supplement because a companion is unable to travel due to an insured risk, we will reimburse you.

After you leave:

  • If you or a travelling companion misses a portion of your trip due to illness, we will pay for economy transportation to continue your trip.
  • If you have to return home due to an insured risk, we will reimburse you for the non-refundable portion of your unused, prepaid, insured travel arrangements, and for economy transportation to return to your departure point.
  • If a covered sickness or injury results in your death, we will pay up to $10,000 for costs to bring you home, or up to $4,000 for cremation and burial at the place of death.

If you miss a connection, we will pay for economy transportation to your destination, reimburse you for your unusable travel arrangements, and provide up to $200 a day ($600 maximum) for personal expenses like a hotel room, meals, and phone calls. This applies if the connecting vehicle was scheduled to arrive at least two hours before the connection time and the delay is due to weather, traffic accident or police road closure, or mechanical failure of the connecting vehicle.

If you cancel your trip before departure, you must notify the Claims Department on the same day that the cause for cancellation occurs. Any event that you are aware of before you book your trip, which may cause you not to travel as planned, will not be covered as a cause of cancellation.

All-inclusive Package Plans

Our All-inclusive Package Plans combine emergency hospital & medical insurance for Canadians with trip cancellation & interruption coverage. Because you buy these plans as a combination, you get a great price on great coverage, both before and during your trip.

Emergency Hospital & Medical Insurance for Canadians provides up to $2 million for emergency hospitalization and medical services in excess of your provincial or territorial plan. Some of the other benefits include:

  • Meals & Accommodation: While you're in hospital, insured family members or travelling companions will be reimbursed up to $3,000 for reasonable living expenses.
  • Transportation of Family or Friend: Up to $3,000 for economy transportation (one round trip) to bring a family member or close friend to your bedside.
  • Accidental Dental: Up to $3,000 for emergency repair or replacement of whole or sound natural teeth caused by an accidental blow to the face.

The Trip Cancellation and Interruption Select Plan insures your travel arrangements against unexpected loss or cancellation not just before your trip, but while you are away.

  • Before you leave, if you cancel your trip due to an insured risk, we will reimburse you for the non-refundable, non-recoverable portion of prepaid airfare and travel arrangements.
  • After you leave, if you or a travelling companion misses a portion of your trip due to illness, we will pay for economy transportation to continue your trip.
  • If you have to return home after you leave due to an insured risk, we will reimburse you for the non-refundable portion of your unused, prepaid, insured travel arrangements, and for economy transportation to return to your departure point.

This plan also provides coverage for delayed baggage, cancellation by the tour operator (for any reason other than default), accidental death & dismemberment, flight accident, and lost or damaged baggage and personal effects. Default of travel supplier is also covered, subject to some exclusions.

Important Notes

  • Maximum period of coverage prior to departure is 365 days.
  • Minimum age 15 days.
  • Use the applicant’s age on the application date.
  • After-departure benefits cover prepaid travel arrangements only.
  • If the insured cancels their trip before departure they must notify us and the TIC Claims Department on the date the cause for cancellation occurs.
  • Benefits payable are limited to the amounts that are non-refundable, as assessed by the travel supplier or agent, at the date of occurrence of the Insured Risk that was the cause for cancellation, regardless of the date the trip is cancelled. (See policy for details)
  • Prior-to-departure benefit amounts in excess of $12,500 require individual consideration. For individual consideration, a Trip Cancellation & Interruption Questionnaire must be completed and submitted to the Medical Underwriting Department for a quote.
